E911 (Enhanced 911)

An emergency services requirement for VoIP systems that ensures 911 dispatchers receive the caller's physical location.

Enhanced 911 (E911) is a regulatory mandate that requires Voice over IP (VoIP) providers to deliver accurate location information to public safety answering points (PSAPs) when a caller dials 911. Unlike traditional landlines — where location data is automatically tied to the physical address — VoIP phones can be used from any location, making automatic location identification more complex.

Under FCC rules, VoIP providers must collect a registered location from each user and transmit it alongside the emergency call. For businesses with remote or hybrid employees, this means each user must keep their registered address current in the system portal. If a user moves to a new office or works from home, they must update their address before an emergency situation arises.

Zonitel is fully FCC-compliant with E911 requirements. The admin portal provides a dedicated E911 address management section where administrators can set and verify emergency addresses per user or device. Users also receive reminders to confirm their registered location when they log in from a new IP address.
